In leech therapy, we make use of the leeches' "blood thirst". Here the leech settles and releases over 30 different substances into the host tissue via its saliva.
These have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cleansing effects. Since their saliva also has anticoagulant properties, rebleeding times of up to 24 hours must be expected.
